Benefits Associated with Small Learning Communities

Guidance - Research has indicated that small learning communities provide increased opportunities for tutoring and mentoring due to teachers having the ability to work with the same students over longer periods.
Relationships – Teachers and students get to know each other better.  In some cases, improved student/teacher relationships may assist students to embrace the academic goals of the school.
Differentiation – Teachers received increased opportunities to learn from each other in frequent team meetings about how to work effectively with students who possess a wide range of learning abilities.
Learning – Educational research has indicated students experience a greater sense of personal identity, an enhanced ability to connect concepts across subject matter areas, and increased opportunities to engage in cooperative learning activities.
Intervention – Teachers may be able to identify at risk students more readily so that earlier intervention and alternative instructional opportunities may arise.
